Sustainability is Everyone's Job

Sustainability is Everyone's Job

As the sustainability movement in the hospitality industry in Hong Kong continues to grow, GREEN Hospitality has recently launched a campaign to celebrate the unique individuals who are tirelessly championing sustainability initiatives behind the scenes. In showcasing these ‘Sustainability Champions’ from across various hospitality teams, we hope to facilitate connection and mutual learning within the vibrant community of sustainability advocates in the hospitality industry, and importantly, hammer home this very fact:  sustainability is everyone's job, regardless of the role one holds in a company or organisation.

In this installment, we spoke with Jordan Wong, Director of Engineering at Lanson Place Causeway Bay, Hong Kong.

  1. What does championing sustainability mean to you and why is it important?

Championing sustainability means actively promoting and engaging in environmentally responsible practices and initiatives. Sustainability is crucial because it safeguards the well-being of both current and future generations. By preserving our planet's resources and ecosystems, we create a healthier, more resilient world.

  1. What are some of the sustainability initiatives you have led?

I’d like to highlight two key sustainability initiatives that I have led:

  1. I introduced the Room Control Unit (RCU) to our guestrooms. This system automatically activates a ‘non-occupied’ mode, adjusting the room temperature to a more energy-efficient 23°C when guests are not present. This initiative significantly reduces electricity consumption and promotes energy efficiency throughout our facility.

  2. I have also focused on promoting sustainable procurement practices by sourcing eco-friendly products and materials. By prioritising suppliers who share our commitment to sustainability, we not only reduce our environmental impact but also support the broader transition towards responsible consumption.

These initiatives reflect my dedication to creating a more sustainable future for our hotel and the community.

  1. Which is your favourite sustainability initiative and why?

My favourite sustainability initiative is the energy reduction programme focused on the smart operation of the chiller plant. This programme aims to reduce electricity consumption, particularly during the winter months. The programme not only led to a significant decrease in our energy usage but also fostered a culture of environmental awareness among our employees. It was rewarding to see everyone come together and take part in our sustainability efforts.

  1. What are some of the sustainability projects currently happening at Lanson Place Causeway Bay, Hong Kong?

Currently, we have several exciting sustainability projects underway. First, we are implementing water-saving measures, which include installing low-flow fixtures to reduce water consumption across our facilities. Additionally, we are collaborating with our suppliers to source sustainable and locally produced products. These initiatives are part of our commitment to fostering a more sustainable workplace.

  1. What is your top advice for someone or a business looking to implement sustainability?

My top advice for someone or a business looking to implement sustainability is to continuously educate yourself. Stay updated on best practices and emerging technologies in sustainability. This ongoing learning will help drive innovation and progress, ensuring your initiatives are effective and impactful.
